Here we will keep some information about recent happenings in the Montrose area.

recent visitor to montrose

Bill Barnacle from Minnesota, more commonly known as "Barnacle Bill", recently made an early morning stop in Montrose.  He has spent the past several weeks kayaking down the Mississippi.  He stopped in Montrose to find a place to refill his water jug.  We found him admiring the aquatic garden, pools, waterfall, and fountain located on the grounds of Montrose Riverfront, Inc. near the Hunold Heritage Center.  This has been the Eagle Scout project of 2 local Boy Scouts, Nathan Gosnell and Jason Rooney.

Barnacle Bill's plans are to meet up with another kayaker near St. Louis and then they will continue their trip down the Mississippi together.  By chance, we happened to meet his partner last summer when he camped at Montrose for the night.  Another coincidence is that we discovered a mutual acquaintance, a cousin of a Montrose residence who lives in Minnesota.  Small world, isn't it!  You can meet the most interesting people in Montrose!

pride of montrose festival

Father's Day weekend was the date of the Second Annual Pride of Montrose Festival.  This year our Pride Focus was the Montrose Volunteer Fire Department.  The fire fighters are shown beside the old 1941 fire truck.  This truck has recently been restored and is brought into duty for local parades and special occasions.  Previous to acquiring this truck, a hook and ladder wagon was used.  During the Pride presentation, two framed photos were presented to the fire chief for display at the fire station.  One was a 1901 photo of the old hook and ladder wagon along with members of the fire department.  It was taken just 3 years after the fire department was formed in 1897.  The second photo showed the same hook and ladder wagon, this time with rubber tires, at the scene of a fire on Main Street during the late 1930s.  After each fireman was presented with a certificate of appreciation, they autographed miniature plastic fire helmets for each to take home as a remembrance of the occasion.  Montrose is truly proud of its fire department and the fine job they do.
